Leica Camera AG marks a significant milestone in the world of photography, celebrating 70 years of its iconic M-System. First launched with the Leica M3 in 1954, this rangefinder system revolutionized the photography world. The M-System’s continuous innovation, from its introduction of digital rangefinders to recent advancements like the Leica M11-P, has cemented its place as a staple for photographers.
On October 24, 2024, Leica officially announced its 70th-anniversary celebration with a range of commemorative releases, including the exclusive “Leica M Edition 70.” This limited edition, restricted to only 250 sets worldwide, combines the classic design of the original Leica M3 with cutting-edge technology found in the current M-System. The camera set includes a Leica M-A, a Leica APO-Summicron-M 50 f/2 ASPH. lens, the Leicavit M fast winder, and a film container, complete with film. With a platinum-plated finish, this special edition is priced at £19,000 / €22,500 and will be available from early 2025 in select Leica stores.
The Leica M-System’s journey is one of relentless refinement. Over the years, models such as the Leica M6, with its integrated exposure metering, and the digital full-frame Leica M9, have left lasting impacts. The M11, Leica’s most recent flagship model, features a Triple Resolution sensor that allows photographers to choose between 60, 36, or 18 megapixels, ensuring the perfect balance between detail and flexibility. Leica’s commitment to both tradition and innovation is also exemplified by the M11-P, the world’s first camera capable of verifying the authenticity of digital images through the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI).
The M-System has always been favoured by photographers for more than just its technical brilliance. Leica cameras are prized for their discreet design and craftsmanship, which provide an unmatched experience when capturing moments. Street photographer Matt Stuart, commenting on his use of the M-Series, said, “Even when people see me using it, they don’t get scared. They don’t see me as a paparazzo – they see me as an artist.”
As part of the anniversary, Leica also introduces new accessories, including three new versions of the Leicavit M fast winder, which are compatible with various analog M models. The new versions will be available in black-painted, glossy black-painted, and silver-chromed finishes, and will retail for £900 / €1,050 from the first half of 2025.
In addition to the hardware, Leica is releasing a 250-page anniversary book titled Leica M, offering a comprehensive history of the M-System. This book features essays, photographs, and archival materials, showcasing the development of Leica’s M cameras. The book will be available from November 5, 2024, for £45 / €49.
An anniversary exhibition will open at Leica Camera AG’s headquarters in Wetzlar, Germany, on November 6, 2024. The exhibition will display historic Leica M-Camera models and provide insights into their production, giving visitors a chance to experience the brand’s seven-decade journey.
